I’m a consultant for DrOmnibus and a Board Dertified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), specializing in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment for autistic children at in-home and center-based programs. I’ve been writing about Julia, a six-year-old diagnosed with severe autism at 18 months, and her experiences learning basic skills using the ABA DrOmnibus Pro Therapy Plus version of the App (designed for ABA therapists and other professionals to work with their clients).

In Julia’s situation, she was ready for table work, meaning she could sit calmly and look me in the eye for a few minutes at a time. I expanded her behavior plan to include the DrOmnibus App for learning colors, numbers and other basic learning skills. In the App, there is an initial baseline test for each of the App’s categories (colors, shapes, vegetables, etc.), which adjusted her to a starting level to ensure success from the beginning. The reinforcer was introduced quickly, and Julia enjoyed the cash-ins. Her favorite was the colorful popping bubbles game, which further encouraged her to keep learning.

After 12 weeks, Julia continues to use the App on her iPad, and practices the different lessons, especially colors, professions, fruits and vegetables. Her mother will sit with Julia to work on the harder lessons like reading emotions. Julia initially struggled with the emotions lessons, but her mother finds she can keep Julia motivated by pointing out how many coins she has acquired for a cash-in. Julia still chooses the popping bubbles as her favorite game.

As a BCBA, I examined Julia’s charts and have found that she has plateaued on several categories in the past several weeks. I am currently putting together discrete trials for her mother to sit with Julia using flashcards and some of the actual items for Julia to label. I am also suggesting that they go around the natural environment, and for her mother to ask Julia to point out the objects she has been learning on the App. I’ll remind her mother to be sure to reward Julia for paying attention. After these specific exercises are completed, I will assess how Julia is doing and will review the DrOmnibus App charts to see how she is practicing and progressing through the levels.

Julia’s mother says she is happy overall with the App. She is pleased that the App isn’t just idle fun, that Julia is actually working towards learning basic things. Mom likes that I can see how Julia is progressing by reviewing the DrOmnibus App charts. She’s excited that I can help design homework lessons for her and her school to use to amplify the learning experience. Since the App was introduced, Julia’s mother also noted that Julia is tantruming less and able to attend to her lessons much better.

As a BCBA, I like the ease of logging into Julia’s account and seeing what she is practicing, and what she has learned in each of the levels. It’s convenient how her mother and I can go over this data and plan things for her to do. The App makes it much easier for me to do client billing. Insurance companies are continually asking for updates to make sure our clients are progressing. The ABA DrOmnibus Pro Therapy Plus version of the App helps make the graphing much easier too.

The next step will be to link her school therapist(s) into the DrOmnibus account so they can be included in the evaluations and can add their notes to the assessments. With their input of ideas, it would be a true collaboration between the school, home and myself. The App lessons are robust enough that Julia has a long way before she completes the program. I look forward to DrOmnibus’s ongoing updates, added lessons and cash-ins that keep the program exciting for my clients.
