A hot topic for most entrepreuners and business executives is how to stay motivated and continue to put your best foot forward in your work. Though there are many motivational speakers out there, few of them are actually teaching science backed methods to self-motivate and achieve.

Today we have a short video by Brett DiNovi & Associates (BDA) where Jay Torres, a Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT) at BDA shares how he builds behavioral momentum. Throughout the video you see ‘JT’s’ daily ‘grind’ and how he structures it to best maintain behavioral momentum.

JT starts his day early and engages in goal setting and self-monitoring throughout the day to keep strengthening his own effective behavior. He also talks about his values and shows us the land he and his family have purchased to build their ‘dream home’ on. In the video, he his verbal behavior makes it clear that relating his work to his family and his dreams for his family augments the functions of work day. As he relates his values to his work and makes a point to contact these values in some form through the day (i.e., kissing his family before he leaves for work and taking a look at his land) he increases the appetitiveness of contacting the hard work of his day.

JT also relates how watching Brett’s motivational videos increase his motivation and clearly chooses to model his own video after Brett’s. JT’s use of movie quotes that relate life and meeting goals to fighting create a symbolic relationship such that he is likely to find himself motivated to fight and achieve. He further chooses music and imagery that relate the constant speed and stops of his daily life as he continues to run through his day achieving the completion of several home visits to help families.

JT’s video reflects behavioral momentum throughout as he completes small goals to allow himself to continuously achieve and reap the behavioral reward of motivation. Then we see JT ending his day with setting up his coffee and picking out clothes for himself and his children, which indeed, lower the response effort he must engage in to start his next day as a RBT at 4:40am!
