Description: Behavior Analysis and Cultural Anthropology have a storied past that is directly connected to Skinner’s original vision – a technology of behavior for the world. In the 1980s, behavior analysts started a dialogue with Marvin Harris, the founder of the anthropological paradigm known as Cultural Materialism. In the subsequent years and series of papers followed, touching on points of contact between the two fields and how they might contribute to large scale cultural change. Moreover, it was from this literature that the metacontingency was born. In this live event, Dr. Ward provides an overview of this interaction, discusses fundamental concepts of cultural materialism, and how they connect to behavioral principles. Lastly, he will discuss applied implications for understanding complex human behavior in 21st century society.

- Participants will be able to define a metacontingency.
- Participants will be able to define a macrocontingency.
- Participants will be able to describe a mode of production.
